3D printed channel letters, from SG machines.

A 3D printed channel letter is a built-up letter whose body is printed, returns and all, straight from a CorelDRAW or DXF file, then finished with a face and LEDs. SG letter printers print returns up to 130 mm deep, in up to four colours, on 800 or 1200 mm beds. Every photo here is real SG work, captioned with how the letter is lit and what the face is.

Three ways to finish the face.

Print the face in the same run, or fit sheet acrylic or an infinity mirror after the print.

  1. Printed face

Printed in the same run as the returns, in up to three colours, or four on the L2S and L2S PRO.

On the machine, in the same run

An SG letter printer's three-head carriage printing yellow letters with printed faces, mirrored on the bed
Printed faces, in the same run as the returns. Printed face-down, so the letters read backwards on the bed
  2. Liquid acrylic

Poured into the printed letter and UV-cured on the machine, on the three Pro models. On the PRO ULTRA, in a single or double layer.

Poured, then UV-cured on a Pro model

A gloved hand pouring yellow liquid acrylic into a printed letter G lying face-down on the bed
Pouring a liquid-acrylic face into a printed letter, face-down on the bed
  3. Sheet acrylic

Cut acrylic fitted to the printed body after the print, as on a fabricated letter.

  4. Infinity mirror

A mirrored face over the LEDs for a deep, repeating tunnel of light.

Questions about printed letters

All questions

How are 3D printed channel letters lit?

The same ways as fabricated letters: face-lit through the face, halo-lit from the back onto the wall, side-lit through translucent returns, or edge-lit along the rim. The LEDs go in after the print. The gallery on this page shows each one.

Which faces can a printed letter have?

Three: a face printed in the same run as the returns; sheet acrylic; or an infinity mirror. Sheet acrylic and infinity mirror are fitted after the print.

Why do the letters read backwards on the bed?

They are printed face-down, so on the bed you see them mirrored. Turned over, they read the right way round.

How deep can the returns be?

Up to 100 mm on the SG-S 3D ULTRA and PRO ULTRA, and up to 130 mm on the SG-S 3D L1S, L1S PRO, L2S and L2S PRO.

How many colours can one letter have?

Up to three in one print, and up to four on the SG-S 3D L2S and L2S PRO.

Can I print letters bigger than the bed?

Yes. The beds are 800 × 800 mm or 1200 × 1200 mm. Bigger letters and logos are printed in sections and joined.

Can I see a letter printed before I buy?

Yes. Book a demo at our showroom at 17 Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware, London HA8 5LD. Visits are by appointment.

Do you make letters for shops?

We sell the printers. If you need letters made and fitted for your own shop, Sign Group, the sign company we are part of, makes and fits them.

Need letters for your shop rather than a machine? Sign Group makes and fits them.
